It seems that every day I get questions about the future of publishing.
- Is there a future in nonfiction publishing, at least in the traditional model?
- Is it bleak or promising?
- What can one do to increase one’s probability of success?
More specifically:
- “Are acquisitions boards meeting virtually and are publishers still buying books right now?”
- “How can I improve my chances of getting a book deal? Should I orient my health [or self-help] book concept more towards the pandemic or COVID 19 or keep it more general?”
- “I’m a public speaker and all my upcoming gigs are canceled. What should I do about my platform?”
- “Should I send my proposal out now or wait until things settle down?”
- “What might we expect down the road in the future, for traditional publishing?”
Literary Agent Linda Konner, who has gotten exciting book deals for several authors I worked with, recently told me, “Business is busy for me.” Her clients are still getting book deals. And yet, there is certainly some bad news (bookstores struggling and closing, layoffs). What will this mean for the future?

The Future of Publishing: How to Proceed and Succeed

We won’t be selling anything—just providing the information that so many of you have been asking to help you make decisions about writing and publishing your nonfiction book—whether it be self-help, health, business, how-to, memoir or another type.
And, yes, there will be time for Q&A from participants!

I missed the Zoom call…but if I had been able to participate, I may have asked a question that has been bugging me for quite a while:
What software can an individual use to self-publish materials written with MS Word? I know about Adobe Acrobat but would also like to provide the option for ePub and/or Mobi.
Doesn’t have to be “free”, but reasonably priced, NON-SUBSCRIPTION software is best for me….since my output is low volume and generally not produced for sale!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave, I asked my colleague and he said, “Usually the outcome is less than professional. If the author has a low budget, they might try finding someone on fiver who can format for them.”
