October is the Month for Writers Conferences and Book Festivals!

I love writers conferences–both presenting and attending workshops. Perhaps my favorite aspect of writers conferences is the opportunity for new input into one’s writing:

  • An essayist may show you a new way of seeing something about your writing.
  • Or a poet may teach you a nifty trick to get your creative juices flowing.
  • Or you may learn some editing tools that make your writing better.

There’s also, of course, the sense of community–just being around other people who love writing, who love words. I often find myself especially inspired after the evening readings–staying up late to write some more.

Writers conferences also offer a time to step away from all the responsibilities of everyday life to completely focus on writing. That focus can also be powerful.

If you’re thinking about a writers conference, October is a perfect month:

  1. Dear Lisa:
Hope this finds u doing well today.
Amazingly helpful instructions on how to proceed with getting a foreword for a book project – Thank U! Inquiring about what’d be the simplest way to partner a percentage of donations with one’s choosing a charitable giving foundation to publish this in the resources/ appendix portion backend of book — Doing this as one part marketing, one part greater good/ passion to want to include this foundation stating: ” a portion of proceeds from sales of this book” kinda thing. Would u call this a licensing deal when an author prints this onto their “children’s book?”
Thanks so much for your time and energy and your consideration. If I could be of any help just holler.

    • If you are self-publishing, you can put it anywhere you want. I would suggest that if the charity is well known or if you want to help them get the most visibility, you might mention this on the back cover, even.
You can certainly mention it in the resources section and you can also mention it in the Acknowledgements. I suppose you could create a licensing agreement, but that’s probably more complex. You might just make a donation of x% every time you hit the $100 mark, or once a month or once a quarter. Just decide ahead of time how you want to do that. You can also give them free books to sell or sell them books at a steep discount. Good luck.
