Winning Book Awards: Tips from a four-time winner

Amy O’Brien, author of Stuck with Mr. Wrong: 10 Steps to Starring in Your Own Life Story has won four awards for this powerful, creative and fun book.  I asked Amy to share some of her secrets to winning awards:

Lisa: What process did you go through to identify the awards?

Amy: When a friend who works for a consulting firm told me that the firm’s owners wrote and published a book that won several awards–and that the award winning book gave the firm and authors such credibility–I realized I should enter Stuck with Mr. Wrong in some contests, prompting an online search for contests I could enter.

Lisa: How many contests did you enter?

Amy: Four:  International Book Awards, National Indie Excellence Awards, USA Best Books, and Next Generation Indie Book Awards.  I won two International book awards (Winner:  Best Self-Help Relationships, Finalist Best New Non-Fiction), one National Indie Excellence (Finalist:  Best Self-Help) and one USA Best Book (Finalist Best Self-Help:  Relationship).

Lisa:  Wow–four awards! What results have you seen?

Amy: I was invited to speak at the What Women Want (now called Inner Woman) series and I have another lead to follow up on today.  Being a “Four-Time Award-Winning Author” has a nice ring to it.  Especially as a self-published author, it adds credibility to my work. I plan to use this to book additional speaking gigs.

Lisa:  Do you just enter the book or does one fill out questions about the book?

Amy: All you have to do is complete the entry form and identify what categories you are entering.  I didn’t have to answer any questions.

Lisa: I know how fulfilling it’s been for you to hear back from readers whose lives have been transformed by your powerful book. I imagine that these contests and the speaking will help you have an impact on even more people. Congratulations.
