We want to hear about the day it all started to change when you joined a group of strangers and struggled up the mountaintop pre-dawn, all judgmental and \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 insecure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8802\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8802\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8802 \" alt=\"back story\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/woman-beach.png\" width=\"266\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/woman-beach.png 266w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/woman-beach-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/woman-beach-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8802\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Take us back a little when appropriate&#8230;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sure, as you&#8217;re headed up the mountain, give us a little backstory, but we don&#8217;t need the loooooooong version.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the term &#8220;backstory&#8221; is often used in fiction and film where the backstory helps the writer connect with a character in order to write in that character&#8217;s voice and understand the character&#8217;s actions. Backstory can also help readers understand a character or narrator&#8211; and her circumstances&#8211;more deeply. Even if you do want to start with your predicament (such as the illness I mentioned earlier), one paragraph of spot-on description can be more powerful than a whole chapter of same.
