I recommend the course to almost anyone writing a book about health or well being\u2014it\u2019s a fabulous place to meet agents and publishers\u2014and to learn so much about the publishing industry in a short period of time.<\/p>\n<p>Authors get feedback about their book ideas\u2014and often end up with a much better sense of both what their\u00a0 book is (what I call the book concept) and what they need to do to become successfully published.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7854\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7854\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7854\" title=\"Creativity Cure\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/creativity-cure-cover.jpg\" alt=\"creativity cure cover\" width=\"165\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/creativity-cure-cover.jpg 165w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/creativity-cure-cover-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/creativity-cure-cover-100x152.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Author Carrie Barron and I met at the Harvard Medical School Publishing Course when this book was the germ of an idea.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today, I\u2019ve interviewed Dr. Carrie Barron\u2014co-author with her husband Alton of <a title=\"creativity cure book\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecreativitycure.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Creativity Cure<\/em><\/a>, which was published by Scribner and came out in hardcover last Spring. I met Carrie at the Harvard course a couple years ago and began working with her on her book concept and book proposal. Her story may sound like a bit of a fairy tale\u2014so put on your glass slippers\u2026<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span><\/strong> Why did you want to write a book?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Carrie:<\/span> <\/strong>I spent many years scribbling thoughts and ideas on pads and blank documents and wanted to organize them into something. I was fascinated by creativity all my life&#8211;read about it, researched it, lived it as a former singer. In my private practice as a psychiatrist I was struck by how people\u2019s moods and feeling about living could dramatically improve if they were involved in a creative process.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span><\/strong> Were there specific goals that motivated you? Opportunities you hoped the book would open up?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Carrie<\/span><\/strong>: I wanted the opportunity to write because I enjoy it so much.\u00a0\u00a0 Writing is a way to explore, to understand, to gain perspective and even to heal. Also, I felt that this information could be helpful to people who were trying to find ways to feel better&#8211;less depressed, less anxious&#8211;and not having any luck. Creativity has been called \u201cthe original anti-depressant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span><\/strong> When we met at Harvard Medical School\u2019s CME Publishing Course you\u2019d mentioned that you\u2019d been playing with the ideas for a book you were calling, \u201cI\u2019m Creative But I Can\u2019t Create.\u201d Can you say more about where you were with the book when we met?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Carrie<\/span><\/strong>: Before Harvard Medical School\u2019s publishing course I had many, many pages but no organization.\u00a0 I had titles, essays, ideas, inspiration but not a coherent package. I didn\u2019t know how to write a proposal. I didn\u2019t have an outline.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa: <\/span><\/strong>What did you want to accomplish by attending the Harvard course?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Carrie:<\/span> <\/strong>I wanted to turn an idea into a product, to have an effective method of writing- meaning a free, letting go part and a structured, crafting part and to learn how to balance them.\u00a0 I wanted to have a writing life and to be able to maintain it. You can meet Jeanne at the course this March.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Carrie:<\/span> <\/strong>I learned an enormous amount about writing from the editors and writers themselves.\u00a0 I realized the importance of promotion and social media and how to integrate this into the process in a way that feels organic. I met editors and agents with a wealth of useful information. I met many people with interesting ideas. The most surprising things I learned were that I could handle \u201cpitching,\u201d that the idea does not have to be perfect and that collaboration with the right person can make all the difference. I met you, Lisa, and Jeanne Fredericks, who became my literary agent. You helped me clarify my book concept and craft my book proposal and Jeanne became our agent\u2014and negotiated a six figure book contract with Scribner. It has been thrilling to work with the Scribner team.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span><\/strong> Any exciting opportunities that have come out of being a published author?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Carrie:<\/span><\/strong> So many things!\u00a0 We signed with Scribner.\u00a0 We have had about thirty- five appearances including talk radio, panels, lectures and presentations. We\u2019ve have contributed to articles published in <a title=\"creativity article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2012\/07\/trickle-down-distress-how-americas-broken-meritocracy-drives-our-national-anxiety-epidemic\/259383\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Atlantic Monthly<\/a>, <a title=\"creativity article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parade.com\/health\/2012\/05\/21-the-art-of-happiness.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parade Magazine<\/a> and others, have a regular blog on <a title=\"psychology today creativity blog\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/experts\/carrie-barron-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psychology Today<\/a>, spoke at The Maker Faire, the Zoomer Conference in Toronto, on the Dr. Alvin Jones radio show and recently participated on a panel on Creativity and Mental Health at the Cactus Caf\u00e9 at UT Austin. The talks are exciting\u2014people ask\u00a0 fascinating questions that really make us think.\u00a0 Other writing opportunities have arisen.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span> <\/strong>Like?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Carrie:<\/span> <\/strong>We\u2019ll be collaborating on some interesting projects that will focus on using Your Own Two Hands and the value of True Connections to other people. The paperback is coming out in the summer. It was fun, informative and stimulating from start to finish.
