Sometimes, what they have to teach is particularly relevant to someone writing a book, as is the case with Dylan Klempner who is an artist in residence at Shands Hospital&#8217;s Arts in Medicine Program and has just launched the program<strong> <em><a title=\"creativity course online\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dylanklempner.com\/31-days-to-a-more-creative-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>31 Days to a More Creative You.<\/strong><\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Here I interview Dylan more about the benefits of creativity&#8211;for anyone and for writers, in particular. Dylan shares his expertise, insights and tips.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span><\/strong> Let&#8217;s start with health, since that&#8217;s such a big part of what you do, Dylan. What are some of the health benefits of creativity?\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:<\/span><\/strong> Studies show that being creative helps us relax.\u00a0 Writing, painting, dancing and singing are excellent stress busters.\u00a0 But the health benefits of creativity and art making go well beyond dealing with the effects of stress.\u00a0 I work at a university affiliated hospital where the arts are used as a companion therapy in just about any illness you can think of.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8073\" alt=\"klemper_dylan-17-small\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/klemper_dylan-17-small-215x300.jpg\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 What are some specific benefits? <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:<\/span> <\/strong>The arts reduce pain levels.\u00a0 Playing and listening to music, for example, is a powerful way to control pain.\u00a0 Dance is used successfully in our hospital to help Parkinson&#8217;s patients maintain mobility.\u00a0 Writing and painting can help you make meaning out of crisis.\u00a0 Viewing visual art is also a powerful tool for disease prevention.\u00a0 It can also soothe and restore us.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span><\/strong>: What are some of your creative practices?\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:<\/span> <\/strong>Art is a primary way I connect with other people, so I practice a variety of art forms that help me do that.\u00a0 I&#8217;m mainly a writer, but I also paint, take photographs, and play drums.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span> <\/strong>How have your other creative practices affected or enhanced your writing?\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:<\/span><\/strong> Creativity is a like a muscle that grows with exercise.\u00a0 I try to follow the invitation I give others, which is to make art for 15 minutes per day.\u00a0 If you can&#8217;t do 15 minutes, do 5.\u00a0 If you can&#8217;t do 5, do 1.\u00a0 The process of making art every day has had a powerful impact on my ability to bring creativity into other areas of my life&#8211;like writing&#8211;when I need it most.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span> <\/strong>That&#8217;s a wonderful way to put it and I couldn&#8217;t agree more about creativity being a muscle.\u00a0Can you share a creativity enhancing exercise that works especially well for writers?\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong> I always recommend journaling. Why did you create the program? Was it personal?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:<\/span><\/strong> Two reasons: First, I wanted to give people simple art making instructions because I know how essential the arts are to our well being.\u00a0 I also wanted to honor the outstanding teachers I&#8217;ve had the privilege to work with over the past several years.\u00a0 I wanted to &#8220;pay forward&#8221; their wisdom and advice.\u00a0 In the process, I&#8217;m learning a tremendous amount from my students about art&#8217;s capacity to help us heal, cope with difficult circumstances, and express ourselves.\u00a0 So the project has had this unintended reciprocal effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span> <\/strong>What benefits might writers expect to get from your course (both as writers and in general)?\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:<\/span><\/strong> If I&#8217;ve learned anything since I began taking myself seriously as a writer about twenty years ago, it&#8217;s that there&#8217;s more to writing than writing.\u00a0 What I mean is, you can write all day without saying anything important to you or anyone else.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s unfulfilling.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not talking about inspiration&#8211;which I actually think is a by-product of simply showing up again and again to do the work and asking big questions.\u00a0 Writers need to figure out what they want to say, then find the means to say it.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa:<\/span><\/strong> How do you feel writers can &#8220;figure out what they want to say&#8221;?<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dylan:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0We do that by developing skills that nourish our writing lives.\u00a0 We need to learn to see, to be present and in our bodies, and to use language.\u00a0 Making art with media besides pen, paper, and word processor, helps us exercise our creative muscles&#8211;like cross-training for an athlete. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span><\/strong>: Readers, I encourage you to <a title=\"be more creative\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dylanklempner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up for Dylan&#8217;s FREE e-course<\/a>&#8211;the first three days of\u00a0 <em>31 Days to a More Creative You<\/em>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>Dylan Klempner is the author of <a title=\"creativity course\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dylanklempner.com\/31-days-to-a-more-creative-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>31 Days to a More Creative You.<\/strong><\/a> He believes that creative play is an essential part of our well-being.
