Joshua introduced me to <a title=\"gina maria mele\" href=\"http:\/\/ginamariamelems.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gina Maria Mele<\/a>, who does fascinating work with people\u2019s belief systems. I asked her how she might apply her work to <a title=\"end writer's block\" href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2010\/11\/writers-block-your-reader-can-help-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writer&#8217;s block<\/a> and here\u2019s her response:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span>: Gina, many aspiring authors get stuck. One of the most common blocks is that deep down they don\u2019t feel safe fully expressing themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Gina<\/span><\/strong>: That fear comes from fear of rejection, which usually goes back to childhood. In some survival capacity, even as an infant you knew it was important to not be rejected by your parents because you depended on them for survival. Now, as an adult, your subconscious, the feeling part of you, can&#8217;t make the distinction that it\u2019s okay to be rejected, because you are not dependent on your parents anymore.<\/p>\n<p>This subconscious fear of rejection is present when you take the risk of expressing yourself in writing. There are a number of specific limiting thoughts or beliefs that support feeling fear when expressing yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span>: What are they?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Gina<\/span><\/strong>: \u201cIt\u2019s not safe to express myself.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not okay to be me.\u201d \u201cIf I make a mistake, I&#8217;ll be rejected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span><\/strong>: <strong>So how might you address and shift such a belief?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5254\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5254\" title=\"no more writer's block\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"no more writer's block\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-640x960.jpg 640w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/lisa-mac-close-vert-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For me, nature often gets me out of any blocks and in a writing groove.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Gina<\/span><\/strong>: Often, when you realize what is underneath the emotions that are blocking you from writing and you bring these beliefs to your conscious, the beliefs lighten their hold on you and sometimes go away completely. Here&#8217;s just one technique I use that doesn&#8217;t require a facilitator:<\/p>\n<p>1. Find a quite place where you can be alone and not be interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>2. Have a pen and paper nearby.<\/p>\n<p>3. Take a deep breath in, feeling the air fill your lungs.<\/p>\n<p>4. Exhale. Feel the air coming out through your nose.<\/p>\n<p>5. Notice what part of you is feeling, &#8220;It is not safe to express myself&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>6. Ask that part of yourself, &#8220;What do you have to say?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>7. Listen. Write down the response.<\/p>\n<p>8. Again, ask the part that is feeling, &#8220;It is not safe to express myself,&#8221; &#8220;What do you have to say?&#8221; Listen. Again, write down the response.<\/p>\n<p>9. Repeat this process as many times as is necessary to get to a place where you have nothing left to write down. This process will help you uncover the subconscious thoughts blocking the writing and bring them to your awareness, so they lose their threat and lighten their grip.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span><\/strong>: It seems this could work with many unconscious beliefs and self-doubts. <strong>Some other common blocks I hear from authors are \u201cWho would want to read what I have to say? Or hasn&#8217;t it been said better before than I can do?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Gina<\/span><\/strong>: You can this method I shared with limiting beliefs about self-worth, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span><\/strong>: <strong>How about procrastination? Where would you say that comes from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Gina<\/span><\/strong>: Limiting beliefs that support procrastination include: I\u2019m not good enough. Nothing I do is good enough. I\u2019m not capable. I\u2019m a failure.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lisa<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0<strong> Yuck. Because, guess what? If you have to do things perfectly, then you can always be protected from failing and feeling the pain of failing. Since you can never quite attain perfection, this keeps you safe and stuck.
