I love summer. Every summer I promise myself to work less, play more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I did some of that this summer. Many days and evenings I walked the length of Narragansett Beach (my favorite time is when the stars are out), enjoyed several visits from family members and out of town friends, read more novels than I’ve ever read in a two month period. Plus I read some great books on reading and writing (like George Saunders’ A Swim in a Pond in the Rain<\/em>, which I picked up at the new bookstore–whose sign literally just says “BOOKSTORE–near my home).<\/p>\n\n\n

And I wrote. Some. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I worked on some ideas for a new journal, collaborating with a colleague. I had a total blast writing a short story (and now I have to figure out what to do with it!). The short story is kinda dark (in a Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery<\/em> kind of way) and I wondered “Where’d that come from?” Dark is usually not my thing. But for what I wanted to say, I think I needed dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, it’s time to get back to finishing a big project–a book I was revising when the idea for The Joy of Writing Journal<\/em> <\/a>came into my consciousness and pushed the bigger book aside. Some might call it “back to work” but that doesn’t sound like fun. I’d say more that I’m back to fully immersing myself in the creative life. Immerse I must, in order to finish my next book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having completed several books before, I know what it takes for me to finish a book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Making time<\/li>
  2. Accountability to keep to that time<\/li>
  3. Consistency<\/li>
  4. Moral support, encouragement, feedback<\/li>
  5. A writing practice that puts me in a state of creative flow<\/li>
  6. Revision, revision, revision (which includes feedback, of course)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    This coming Tuesday, September 13, I’m going to share how to finally get your writing done. And you’ll learn my 5 step process for writing in flow (which works like magic!) in a free training called Finally Get Your Writing Done.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In that zoom-based workshop, you’ll get to bring a project to the call and make some inspired headway using my simple and fun 5-step system. Or, if you don’t yet have a project, you can just use one of the writing prompts I’ll provide and work on something more spontaneous.<\/p>\n\n\n
