In any business, one asks, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&#8220;Who&#8217;s the market for this?&#8221; <\/li><li>&#8220;What am I offering?&#8221; <\/li><li>&#8220;What can this do for them to meet a need?&#8221; <\/li><li>&#8220;What&#8217;s unique about what I have to offer?&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At another level, the questions seem to get a little existential:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&#8220;Why am I here?&#8221; <\/li><li>&#8220;Who am I here to serve?&#8221; <\/li><li>&#8220;How can I serve them in a way that nourishes both of us, me and my people?&#8221; <\/li><li>&#8220;How can I make my offerings (whether a social media post, a blog post, a book, a course) the most fun and fulfilling for all of u<em>s<\/em>\u2014you and me and any new people that may be drawn to the book and other offerings?&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And while you or I may have asked these questions before,&nbsp; a new book may initiate a pivot, an expansion to a wider audience or some other shift in<\/em> <em>the readers and clients we serve.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-where-to-ask-these-questions-of-readers\">When &amp; Where To Ask These Questions of Readers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"162\" height=\"131\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Twitter_logo_blue.png\" alt=\"Connect with readers on Twitter\" class=\"wp-image-10597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Twitter_logo_blue.png 162w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Twitter_logo_blue-150x121.png 150w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Twitter_logo_blue-100x81.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 162px) 100vw, 162px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, before you write a book, especially nonfiction, it&#8217;s important to ask the first four questions about your readers.  You can ask them in a blog post like this one, in a private facebook group, in a survey (using Survey Monkey or Google Survey) on other social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, Tiktok, not sure about Instagram&#8211;what do you think?).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you ask on multiple platforms, just seeing where you get answers will help you know where your most engaged readers hang out, perhaps. Or the differences in your readership\/market on multiple platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you write the book, I urge you to get some initial feedback from early <a href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2018\/02\/beta-readers-find-questions-ask\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beta readers<\/a> to find out where your book meets your readers&#8217; needs and where it could be more clear, exciting, helpful, potent or engaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reader-research-continues\">Reader Research Continues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3d_red_question_mark_button_image_165506.jpg\" alt=\"questions about target readers\" class=\"wp-image-12365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3d_red_question_mark_button_image_165506.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3d_red_question_mark_button_image_165506-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3d_red_question_mark_button_image_165506-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your book is written, your <a href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2021\/05\/how-to-get-inside-a-readers-head-and-write-a-book-readers-will-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reader research<\/a> is not necessarily done. It may be time to ask these questions once again, particularly if your book has changed. Or if you were a bit cavalier about reader research earlier in the process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even once your book is <a href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/find-an-editor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">edited<\/a>, you have another opportunity to learn more about your readers. As you plan to market the book and spread the word, you need to know where your future readers hang out and which aspects of your book they may find most necessary or enticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-making-the-most-of-your-book-and-its-impact-on-readers\">Making the Most of Your Book and Its Impact on Readers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your book seems to indicate an evolving sense of whom you are here to serve, it&#8217;s especially helpful to do some research about creating offerings that will serve them once the book is published.
