This post should help you avoid those mistakes and omissions and make your proposal more attractive to literary agents and publishers. Ready?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-general-book-proposal-tips\">2 General Book Proposal Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For a prescriptive book, such as self-help, how-to or business, a good phrase to use throughout \u2014&nbsp;<strong>\u201creaders will learn.\u201d<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Embrace Diversity<\/strong>: for <strong>stories and anecdotes<\/strong>, remember how diverse our society is. I often see books with anecdote after anecdote about people with generic Caucasian-sounding names. Use representative examples from diverse communities and groups. You may be creating composites of clients or patients. Be sure to make sure they represent diversity\u2014ethnically, gender-wise, etc. If everyone has a vanilla name and profile, publishers and agents will think you are out of touch or don\u2019t understand the needs of a diverse readership. This is especially important for parenting books, but helpful in any self help book.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-section-specific-book-proposal-tips\">Section-Specific Book Proposal Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your <strong>Overview<\/strong>&nbsp;needs to be super-compelling. You may even want to write that last, once you have figured out what your most compelling points are. I worked with Victoria on her book proposal for Reset Your Child\u2019s Brain, which garnered a book deal with New World Library. She worked hard on her platform before submitting her book proposal to agents.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2010\/05\/write-a-book-proposal-researching-your-markets-for-the-book-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Audience<\/strong>&nbsp;section<\/a>: needs numbers. Use census and other data. I often see an audience or markets section that is more qualitative than quantitative but it&#8217;s the numbers that get bandied about and used to calculate sales projections in an acquisitions board meeting. If you want your book to make it to that meeting, supply the numbers they&#8217;ll need to make sales projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/today-show-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17169\" width=\"219\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/today-show-logo.jpg 229w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/today-show-logo-150x144.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/today-show-logo-100x96.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Platform and <a href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2010\/04\/what-do-publishers-expect-in-your-promotion-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Promotion Plan<\/a>:<\/strong>&nbsp;These are crucial to publishers (and are also used for sales projections). Make sure your promotion plan stems from your platform. Tip for 2021 and beyond: Consider making sure your plan is COVID-proof. Many (or most) of your promotion activities should occur online \u2013 such as podcasts, being a panelist on online summits, online conferences, etc. Consider doing some podcast guesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2013\/10\/how-to-write-a-book-proposal-writing-the-competing-books-section\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Comps section<\/a><\/strong>: if there is some very strong information about how your book fills an unmet need and ways it uses the latest research, make sure you mention this in the overview as well as comps . Also, you can look at amazon reviews for some of these competitive and complementary books and note what readers are saying is missing from your competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chapter Outlines or Summaries<\/strong>: In general, say that \u201cthe chapter\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;explores, describes, illustrates, etc. rather than \u201cthe author\u201d will explore\u2026etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-next-steps\">Next Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What questions do you have for me about book proposals?
