Let it unfold. See where you&#8217;re led.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Though it challenged me, I listened to my muse.<\/p>\n<p>I had a couple of ideas for where I wanted to visit on my days off from teaching, but I mostly let go of those ideas and set out on adventures that presented themselves day to day.<\/p>\n<h3>Discovering the Chao Phraya River and a New Teacher<\/h3>\n<p>Much of my adventure centered around an article I read in the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/lifestyle\/social-and-lifestyle\/1254770\/raindrop-wisdom\" target=\"_blank\">Bangkok Post<\/a> about Kundalini Yoga teacher <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sundertashekaur.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sunderta She Kaur<\/a> and the Shaolin Staff Qigong class she would be offering at <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thesiamhotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Siam Hotel<\/a> that week. I&#8217;d been praying for a qigong teacher\/mentor and, though the idea of practicing with a staff didn&#8217;t particularly appeal to me, I decided to reach out, in case this was my answered prayer\u2014though a teacher halfway across the globe seemed\u00a0a bit extreme.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15307\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0044-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0044-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0044-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0044-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0044-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0044-640x480.jpg 640w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0044.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I scheduled a private session for the following day and, \u00a0at Sunderta&#8217;s urging, I took the &#8220;sky train&#8221;\u2014think above ground &#8220;subway&#8221;\u2014and met her at Saphan Taksin BTS Station pier on the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chao_Phraya_River\" target=\"_blank\">Chao Phraya River<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d been intimidated by the river on <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2016\/10\/write-despite-plus-writing-thailand\/\" target=\"_blank\">my first trip to Bangkok<\/a>,\u00a0but my muse seemed to lead me there.<\/p>\n<p>We took the Siam Hotel taxi boat up river, about a 45 minute ride\u00a0taking us past old homes, dilapidated industrial spaces, skyscraper hotels and residences, elaborate and colorful Buddhist temples (my favorite), barges, taxi boats, long tail boats (for traveling the city&#8217;s canals)\u2014such variety.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-15308\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0053-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0053-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0053-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0053-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0053-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0053-640x480.jpg 640w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0053.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The journey seemed to tell a story of Bangkok\u2014about its traditional-modern-artistic-<wbr \/>anciently-rooted-spiritual culture.<\/p>\n<p>The cool breeze on the river, as well as the covered boat, served as the perfect antidote to the otherwise steamy weather.<br \/>\nOur river trip was followed by a private lesson in Shaolin Staff Qigong, in an exquisite space on a circular marble dais, followed by Kundalini yoga breath work and then a gong sound meditation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15309\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15309 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0250-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0250-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0250-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0250-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0250-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0250-640x480.jpg 640w, https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0250.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My teacher, Sunderta, teaching Shaolin Staff Qigong at The Siam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The staff techniques turned out to be especially appealing\u2014Twisting Dragon, Carry the Moon, Lifting the Sky, Cleaning the Rice, Dancing Crane, Monkey Alert. Each move taught me about energy flow, conservation, efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>It felt as if the staff imbued me with a sense of support, strength and power. I jotted down a few rough notes. That&#8217;s all. The productive &#8220;do-er&#8221; in me wanted more.<\/p>\n<p>I let it be okay\u2014both the not writing much and the judgment about it.<\/p>\n<h3>Flowing Like a River<\/h3>\n<p>Once class ended, the words began to flow and I captured the surprises and quirky details of my trip. But I didn&#8217;t &#8220;make&#8221; the next few days about writing,\u00a0despite feeling tempted to do so.<\/p>\n<p>I listened to my muse. I let it be about surrender and trust.<\/p>\n<p>And that helped my writing flow.<\/p>\n<p>I had thought that my writing in Thailand about this trip might complete the writing I began on my first trip, but it didn&#8217;t. And so you follow the muse and wait.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still waiting. I&#8217;m not sure how these trips will tie together in a book or whether they will at all.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s okay.
