{"id":1487,"date":"2010-06-24T21:53:09","date_gmt":"2010-06-25T02:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lisatener.local\/blog\/?p=1487"},"modified":"2024-09-30T09:00:47","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T13:00:47","slug":"uri-summer-writing-conference-3-big-lessons-on-day-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/2010\/06\/uri-summer-writing-conference-3-big-lessons-on-day-1\/","title":{"rendered":"URI Summer Writing Conference: 3 Big Lessons on Day 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I&#8217;d love to share some photos from day 1 of the <a title=\"summer writing conference\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uri.edu\/summerwriting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean State Summer Writing Conference<\/a> with you<\/span>:<\/strong> There&#8217;s the one of Cate Tucker (from my book writing class), Peter Covino (director of the conference), me and bestselling author <a title=\"Robert Leuci\" href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/authors\/17408\/Robert_Leuci\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Leuci<\/a>&#8216;s thumb. Not his fault.\u00a0 My phone has a highly non-intuitive camera. Not that a phone can possess intuition, but even those with ESP would have a hard time figuring it out, not that Robert Leuci has ESP.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, can&#8217;t share the photos because I don&#8217;t know how to e-mail them from my phone.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The first lesson of the day<\/strong><\/span>, then: if you blog, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">bring an extra battery<\/span> for your real camera. Or, if I were to generalize: <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">be prepared<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Second lesson<\/strong><\/span>: <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Enjoy writing; be playful<\/span><\/strong>. I&#8217;d been putting so much pressure on myself to write the next blockbuster middle grade novel\/screenplay\/Broadway musical that I felt completely overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting with novelist <strong><a title=\"crystal wilkinson\" href=\"www.crystalwilkinson.com?phpMyAdmin=da89edac2b6e1b472a5036c219eeb6b4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crystal Wilkinson<\/a><\/strong> for a one on one, I realized that all the things I see as possibly insurmountable problems in my novel clearly are just that: possibly insurmountable.\u00a0 And, still, I&#8217;m attracted to the story.<\/p>\n<p>Crystal gave me some exciting ways to play with the book: write pages of &#8220;What if&#8217;s&#8221; about the characters, their actions, the world I&#8217;m creating. Some images came to mind that made me laugh out loud as we toyed with what if&#8217;s and my muse came out to play.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve given myself permission to make this fun&#8211;it&#8217;s a children&#8217;s novel, after all&#8211;and I finally realized that, in my previous state of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">seriosity<\/span><\/strong> (yes, new word), there was no way I could ever write the book. In my new found state of openness and chill, there&#8217;s potential, possibility, spark.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Lesson Three<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">: <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Do your homework; put the writing first<\/span><\/strong>. Peter invited conference presenters to Jamestown for a light dinner after the reception and readings. And then he invited the whole gang. <strong><em>But we had homework!<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I almost went. It&#8217;s a wonderful thing to meet writers, connect, find company in the sometimes-lonely world of writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But I knew that if I went to dinner, I would never get my homework done. Or I&#8217;d do a slipshod job and go to bed too late and wake up tired. I tell my book writing students all the time to <strong>get enough sleep<\/strong> and <strong>write when you&#8221;re fresh<\/strong>. I tell them to cut down on the socializing for the short time they&#8217;re writing their books. They can use socializing as a reward after completing some writing commitment. But <strong>don&#8217;t give up writing time to go out<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the record, I took my own advice. And it felt great. I rewrote my &#8220;scene.&#8221; I read the three well-crafted stories we received in class. I&#8217;m going to bed by 10 and I may even have time to take a bath before bed.
