Whoops. Turns out I forgot to tell the author to put \u201cRequested material\u201d and my name on the envelope. I knew better, but just forgot. My omission is your boon, since it&#8217;s an important point to remember.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[Note: I wrote this post some time ago. Most book proposals are sent by e-mail now, but do include &#8220;requested material:book proposal&#8221;\u00a0 in your subject line. In the email, include the conference where you met, the name of the person who introduced you, or anything else that will remind them of your connection .]<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here are 3 steps to make sure your book proposal gets read:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1290\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1290\" title=\"file-folders\" src=\"https:\/\/jodieburdette.net\/lisatener\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/file-folders-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"file-folders\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Avoid the slush pile.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ListParagraphCxSpFirst\">1. <strong>Send a query first.<\/strong> Only send the proposal once the agent or publisher requests it. Otherwise, it goes straight to the slush pile or sometimes even the trash\u2014the penalty of <em>not following directions<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ListParagraphCxSpMiddle\">2. <strong>Check the agent\u2019s website<\/strong> to see if he or she prefers queries by phone or e-mail. Different agents have different preferences; your upfront research shows you\u2019re a team player.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ListParagraphCxSpLast\">3. <strong>Once an agent has requested your proposal<\/strong>, either because of a query you sent or a pitch you made in person at a conference, <strong>mark the envelope<\/strong> (left bottom corner) <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[or nowadays, it&#8217;s mostly the subject line of the e-mail]<\/span><\/strong>: \u201c<strong>Requested<\/strong>:\u201d followed by an abbreviated version of the <strong>title <\/strong>of your book. If you met the agent at a conference, <strong>include the conference<\/strong> where you met. For example, you might write, \u201cRequested: Saigon Effect: Harvard Medical Course.\u201d This will get you priority reading. I find that agents will look at a requested proposal I sent them anywhere from immediately to two weeks out, occasionally as long as a month. The agent was very kind and understanding about my omission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So remember:\u00a0 Send a query first. Research the agent&#8217;s website for query preference.
