Lift off–write a poem!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I\u2019ve been writing daily and here\u2019s my secret\u2014I write a poem a day. \u00a0Now, it\u2019s a big admission for me to even share this, because even though poetry was my first love, I had learned somehow to marginalize poetry in my adult life\u2014and I think that\u2019s because as a culture we\u2019ve marginalized poetry and poets.<\/p>\n

Here is just some of the beauty of writing poems:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It stretches your muscles\u2014you can play with language, metaphor, rhythm and all the tools of writing. \u00a0All this practice will improve your prose.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s extremely satisfying\u2014you can write an entire piece in ten minutes or twenty and feel the thrill of catharsis in that final line.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s freeing and fun\u2014no rules, no question of how you can make it commercial or marketable\u2014your inner child gets to play.<\/p>\n

So, just for fun, here is an unedited poem I wrote one morning:<\/p>\n

blast off<\/strong><\/p>\n

nothing quite like<\/p>\n

the freedom of a poem<\/p>\n

no freakin’ rules<\/p>\n

write anything<\/p>\n

stick three verbs together<\/p>\n

to make one<\/p>\n

invent new words<\/p>\n

CAPITALIZE<\/p>\n

alliterate<\/p>\n

alienate<\/p>\n

regurgitate<\/p>\n

be silly<\/p>\n

witty<\/p>\n

or bore us to death<\/p>\n

because it’s<\/p>\n

“only a poem”<\/p>\n

oh, yes, we think we<\/p>\n

castrated poetry<\/p>\n

made a eunuch of the muse<\/p>\n

Ha!<\/p>\n

a poem is a neutron bomb<\/p>\n

in words.<\/p>\n
